Nancy Griffin Buchanan was born April 29, 1936, in Valdosta, Ga., to Clayton Ramon Griffin and Ermine Felder Griffin.
She attended Stetson University, got her Medical Technologist training at Baptist Hospital in New Orleans, La., and earned her B.S. at the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga. Nancy married Loren Buchanan Jr. in September 1957. After marrying, she and Buck lived in various locations until his job with the NCDA brought them to Wilkes County permanently in 1966. She was the owner and operator of The Oaks Catering, a longtime member as well as a former hostess at Wilkesboro Baptist Church, and retired from the laboratory of Wilkes General Hospital. Her South Georgia heritage translated to her love of hospitality, baking, and gardening. Friends were always welcome and every birthday was marked by a traditional, from scratch, 5-flavor cake with an almond infused frosting. Her hands were often busy with crafts — examples of her cross stitching, sewing projects and her jeweled eggs adorn the home.
An avid traveler and collector of antiques and plants, her retirement was spent on the road and in the garden. Every trip involved visiting a dear relative or close acquaintance from school days. In her later years, her loyal companion was her miniature schnauzer Sassy and together they were faithful attenders of the Hidden Oakes Dog Park.
Nancy Ermine was a generous, kind and friendly soul. Though her mind faded, her sense of appreciation for others never waned. No one ever left her presence without her telling them, “Thank you for what you’ve done.”
She is survived by her husband of 63 years; her children, Dawn Ethel Ermine Buchanan, Heather Buchanan Jazwinski and Clayton Eldon Buchanan; grandchildren, Alexander and Nicholas Rhoades, Kamdyn Jazwinski, Sophia and William Buchanan; and a brother, Ramon Griffin of Colorado.
Her friends and family will honor her memory with an informal gathering at her home at a later date. Memorials may be made to Ebenezer Children’s Home, P.O. Box 2777, North Wilkesboro, N.C., 28659. Miller Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements. Online condolences may be made to www.miller
