Lucy Stone Brown

Lucy Stone Brown, 82, of Hays, passed away at her home, Wednesday, July 27, 2022. Lucy was born Nov. 3, 1939, in Wilkes County to Verne Walter and Prudie Blackburn Stone. She was a Member of Hinshaw Street Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Max Stone; and sister, Agnes Elledge.

Lucy is survived by her husband, Rex Brown, of 63 years, of Hays; son, James Walter Brown, and spouse, Tammy, of Lake Park, Ga; daughter, Rebecca Brown Miller and spouse, Ed, of Boone; grandsons, Russell James Miller and Joseph David Miller, both of Boone; brother-in-law, Warren Elledge, of Wilkesboro; sister-in-law, Margaret Stone, of Hays; nieces, Robin Elledge Bibby, Terri Stone Walker and Deborah Stone Rogers.

Lucy and Rex shared a rare and special love for each other for more than 63 years. Lucy was actively involved in many areas throughout the church during her service there. She retired after many years with Duke Energy. In her retirement, she loved spending time with her grandkids and going to her son’s football games, as he coached at several colleges and high schools. She also loved traveling and shopping. She and her sister, Agnes were best friends, excellent seamstresses and spent many hours quilting with the quilting group at Wilkes Senior Center. They made many beautiful quilts that will continue to be treasured by family and friends. She and Rex spent the last years of her life at home, as she dealt with MS and macular degeneration. Even though there were times she couldn’t get out much, she loved encouraging friends through phone calls.

The family wishes to thank all of those who cared for her and helped her heal from injuries from falls or surgeries. For those who knew Lucy and her beautiful journey with us, her celebration of life will be held 3 p.m., Sunday, July 31, 2022, at Hinshaw Street Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Gore officiating.
