Laura Gwyndolyn “Gwyn” Walker Stinson, 88, of Wilkesboro passed away Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2021, at her home.
A private celebration of life will be held at Wilkesboro Baptist Church with Rev. Chris Hefner officiating.
Mrs. Stinson was born May 8, 1932, in Wilkes County to Purvis Gwyn and Nell Jarvis Walker, and spent her childhood growing up in Elkin. She graduated from Wake Forest University School of Nursing (formerly North Carolina Baptist Hospital) with a diploma degree in nursing and worked as an RN at the General Hospital of Athens while her husband finished veterinary school at the University of Georgia. Following their move back to N.C., she raised four children and continued to participate in nursing, as well as work at the Animal Hospital of Wilkes. Gwyn had a great appreciation for music and was the church pianist for over 50 years at Wilkesboro Baptist Church, where she was also involved in the children’s and youth ministries. Mrs. Stinson was an active member of Wilkes Playmakers for many years, and particularly enjoyed her time with Seniors on Stage. She will be remembered for her devotion to family, many talents and her uncanny sense of humor and wit.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Stinson was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Walker.
Mrs. Stinson is survived by her husband, Dr. Walter Stinson; a daughter, Melinda Nell Stinson of Wilkesboro; three sons, Russell Thomas Stinson and wife, Laura, of Winston-Salem, Joel Richard Stinson and wife, Jeannie, of North Wilkesboro and John Walter Stinson and wife, Stephanie, of North Wilkesboro; 11 grandchildren, Matthew Stinson, Rachel Stinson, Patrick Stinson, Lucas Stinson, Jackson Stinson, Seth Swofford, Sam Swofford, Sarah Swofford, Holly Swofford, Jacob Stinson and David Stinson; nine great-grandchildren, Adelyn Swofford, Lucy Swofford, Jack Swofford, Elam Swofford, Case Swofford, Caroline Starnes, Henry Stinson, Emma Stinson and Luke Stinson. In addition, she is survived by her sister and lifelong best friend, Janet (Walker) Royal Foster (formerly of Wilkesboro) and husband, Tom, of Concord.
