Karl Warren Hunsberger

Karl Warren Hunsberger, 62, of Wilkesboro passed away Monday, Jan. 23, 2023, at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist-Wilkes Medical Center.

Funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29, 2023, at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with Mr. Curtis Bauske and Mr. Ken Pinney officiating. Karl’s brother, Eric, will be offering the eulogy. The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:30 p.m. prior to the service at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

Karl was born Aug. 12, 1960, in Tampa, Fla., to Wesley James and Vivian Warren Hunsberger.

Karl graduated from the University of South Florida with a degree in accounting, but quickly found working with computers and information technology was his niche. Beginning his career in healthcare technology, he worked in Florida, California and eventually settled in North Carolina. He finished out his career at Lowe’s Companies Inc. and retired in 2021 after 26 years of service.

Karl had a deep and abiding faith in his loving God and was an active member in his Faith. He was a humble man and an inspiration to others.

Karl was married to the love of his life, Cheryl, for 32 years. Cheryl remembers Karl as the person who brought a smile to her face every day with his sense of humor and his ability to find joy in the simplest things.

Together Karl and Cheryl enjoyed travel and being involved in their children’s extra-curricular activities. Karl was the Wilkes Central Band Boosters president. He also served as a US Swim official while his children were active swim team members. Karl served as pack leader for his son’s Cub Scout pack and remained active with Boy Scouts after his son earned his Eagle Scout. As a troop leader, he continued his service by volunteering each year at MerleFest,

cheerfully driving buses and greeting attendees with his infectious smile.

Gunnar and Kinley remember their Dad as the man they relied on in every aspect of their lives. He was Mr. Fix-it, knew something about everything, a great listener and their biggest advocate.

In the last three years, Karl and Cheryl welcomed two granddaughters into their lives and enjoyed extended visits to Utah to spend time with them. His granddaughter, Remi, loved spending quiet moments sitting on Pop Pop’s lap watching races.

Karl was an avid dog lover and advocate of animal adoption. He looked forward to long daily walks with his own rescue dogs, and pampering them in any way he could.

Karl is remembered by all who knew him as happy, kind, someone who anticipated the needs of others and enthusiastically jumped in to help. Friends and family describe Karl as “one-in-million,” and a man of character who truly made this world a better place.

He was preceded in death by his father, Wesley James Hunsberger.

He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Lindsay Hunsberger of the home; a daughter, Kinley Laurel Hunsberger of Greensboro; a son, Gunnar Wesley Hunsberger and wife, Maddie, of West Haven, Utah; two grandchildren, Remi Cheryl Hunsberger, Rosie Vivian Hunsberger; his mother, Vivian Warren Hunsberger of Frisco, Texas; two sisters, Holly Gay Hunsberger-Dunne and husband, Tom, of Murrieta, Calif., Tandy Sue Wood and husband, Bruce, of Frisco, Texas; a brother, Eric Alan Hunsberger and wife, Carol, of Fort Pierce, Fla.
