John Dee Nichols Jr., 69 of Winston-Salem, formerly of Millers Creek, passed away Wednesday, March 1, 2023, at Forsyth Medical Center.
A Celebration of life will be held 3:30 p.m. Saturday, March 11, 2023, at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel.
John was born June 21, 1953, in Sullivan County, Tenn., to John Dee Nichols Sr. and Aileen Clasby Nichols. He graduated from West Wilkes High School and received a BS/BA degree from Appalachian State University. After an early career in sales with Keebler, he moved into property management, leading into his most recent role as president of NC Housing Service and Management Corporation. “Big John,” as he was affectionately called, had a heart of gold and never met a man he didn’t like. His compassion to those with the greatest need knew no boundaries. He was loved by many and will be missed dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by a companion of several years, Jennifer Owings; a sister, Jerrye Hayes and husband, Kent, all of Winston-Salem, two nephews, C. Mark Hayes and partner, Dine Badri, of Washington, D.C., and Gregory A. Hayes of Shaker Heights, Ohio; two bonus children, Jay Owings of Winston-Salem, Jada Weaver and husband, Matthew, of Millers Creek; and two bonus grandchildren, Jayanna and Maverick Weaver.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Forsyth Humane Society, 4881 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, N.C., 27104.
