Harold Arthur “Bud” McKew Jr., 84, of Moravian Falls, passed away Wednesday, July 29, 2020, at Wilkes Health and Rehabilitation Center. Mr. McKew was born Nov. 26, 1935, in Rome, Ga., to Harold Arthur McKew Sr. and Myra Jane Daniel McKew.
Harold was a member of Wilkesboro Presbyterian Chapel in Wilkesboro. He was a kind, generous and brilliant person whose hobbies were diverse. He enjoyed piloting airplanes, woodworking, rebuilding cars and scuba diving. He was an engineer at heart, always preferring to be thrifty, fixing anything that was broken and rebuilding instead of buying new. He was a 1961 graduate of Georgia Tech Industrial Engineering: “a rambling wreck from Georgia Tech, a hell of an engineer.” Mr. McKew did mission work and built churches in Honduras. He lived in Sao Paulo, Brazil. in his youth and spoke Portuguese and Spanish fluently.
He retired from the engineering department at Ithaca Industries. After retirement, he went back to school to obtain his certified nursing assistant license. He worked at the library for several years after retirement, as well. He was a lifelong teacher to everyone he knew and loved.
Mr. McKew was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Jane Davenport.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth McKew; a son, David McKew and spouse, Angie, of Foxfire Village; a daughter, Beth McKew of Greensboro; his grandchildren, Echo Idalski and spouse, Richard, of Holly Springs, Bethany Ritch and spouse, Jonathan, of Mars Hill, Danielle West of Greensboro, Davis McKew of Savannah, Ga., and Nolan McKew of New York City; and six great-grandchildren. He also leaves his dog, Rose, and his cat, Zulily, who were very special to him.
