Gary Edward Martin

Gary Edward Martin

With saddened hearts and uplifted eyes, we wish to inform of the passing of our beloved Gary Edward Martin of Hays into the hands of our creator early Tuesday morning, Oct. 13, 2020.

Son of James Edward and Virginia Delores Miller Martin, Gary was a father, brother, educator, supporter, protector and guide to all who knew him. He served in the U.S. Army and was a proud American. He loved his children, his extended family, his home and especially his beloved high school sweetheart and wife of 38 years, Janet Roland Martin.

He was eternally supportive, never lacking in enthusiasm or a kind word for a “job well done.” He loved seeing beauty in the smallest things — a sunset, a flower, the changing of the leaves.

A “perfectionist” also at heart, no detail was too small to attend to and he always taught his boys the idea, “If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well.” He enjoyed music, cars, a good movie, his current events, a good cup of coffee and a conversation. He was a deep thinker and a wonderfully enlightened conversationalist. Aristotle said, “The mark of an educated mind is the ability to entertain an idea without accepting it.” In this regard and others, he was exceptional. Always quick to lend an ear, and to give you his full attention, he made you feel important, and most of all, he made you feel understood. Even if he didn’t agree with you, he would stand by you. This is why he was such a bedrock to so many who knew him.

This is why we loved him.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, 2020, at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with Rev. Joey Byrd officiating. Burial with military honors by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142 will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

Gary is survived by his two sons, Chris and wife, Maja, of Raleigh, and their three children, Ava, Ella and Noah, and Greg and wife, Carolyn, of North Wilkesboro, and their two sons, Jackson and Landon, as well as his sister, Barbara Martin Baker, her three children, Kevin Farrington, Jason Farrington, Michelle Jarvis, and her daughters, Arieana and Erica, and Barbara’s husband, Norman Baker, all of Hays.

We rejoice in the knowledge that he is reunited with his beloved wife, Janet, in eternity, where we shall meet them ourselves when our time is called.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made Samaritan’s Purse Ministries, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, N.C., 28607.
