William “Bill” Porter Jr., 73, of Roaring River passed away Saturday, June 29, 2019, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born March 9, 1946, in Wilkes County to William Franklin Porter Sr. and Lessie Pruitt Porter.
Mr. Porter was a U.S. Army National Guard veteran. Bill played mandolin and harmonica and collected coins and stamps. Bill was a very hard-working farmer.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Hazel McHone, Opal Dimette, Arlene Vickers, Wanda Cockrum and Rosalie Pierce; and a brother, Sam Porter.
Surviving are his wife, Kathleen Garrett Porter; a son, Charles Enoch Porter and spouse, Jeanny, of Roaring River; his daughters, Mary Jane Rogers and spouse, Jason, of Hamptonville and Kimberly Jackson of Thomasville; his grandchildren, Joseph Brock and Caitlin Brock, both of Roaring River, and Tyler Jackson of Thomasville; a great-granddaughter, Araiah Brock of Roaring River; his brothers, Larry Porter of North Wilkesboro, Clayton Porter, Don Porter and Garry Porter, all of Roaring River; his sisters, Nancy Minton, Barbara Farmer and Elaine Poplin, all of North Wilkesboro, and Pauline Price of Granite Falls; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 4, 2019, at Rachel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Brian Wiles, Joseph Brock, Caitlin Brock and Charles Porter officiating. Burial, with military honors provided by the honor guard from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142, will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Miller Funeral Service from 6 until 8 Wednesday night.
