An elderly woman was badly injured when she was run over by her own car Monday morning on Arbor Grove Church Road in the Millers Creek community, according to Trooper R.R. Walker of the N.C. Highway Patrol.
Joan Bumgarner, 81, of the Wilbar community was taken to Wilkes Medical Center by Wilkes Emergency Medical Services, Walker said. She was flown to Wake Forest Baptist Hospital by AirCare helicopter for treatment of fractured legs and other injuries.
Around 11:30 a.m., Bumgarner was operating a 2008 Honda Accord when she stopped the car and got out to check on a fence, the trooper said. The vehicle rolled backwards, hitting Bumgarner and running over her legs.
A passerby, Trey Darnell, stopped and took off his shirt to use as a tourniquet on Bumgarner’s leg, which was bleeding badly, Walker said.
“Thank goodness for people like that,” he said of Darnell, noting that the bleeding was so severe that Bumgarner might otherwise have died. The trooper said he was very appreciative of Darnell’s actions.
Millers Creek Fire Department first responders assisted. Walker was assisted in his investigation by Trooper C.M. Anderson.
Walker said Bumgarner’s elderly husband was a passenger in the car.
