A Purlear woman died in a wreck Friday afternoon on Old N.C. 60 about four miles south of Ronda, according to Trooper J.G. Barnes of the N.C. Highway Patrol.

Robbie Jean Ammons, 57, of Summit Road, driver of a 2002 Toyota Camry, died at the scene, Barnes said.

Ammons was traveling west when she went off on the right and hit a culvert, the trooper said. The vehicle then went off on the left and hit a fence and two trees before coming to rest against another tree.

Ammons sustained multiple trauma, but she may have been experiencing a medical problem at the time of the crash, Barnes said.

The Toyota was a total loss in the accident, which happened around 2:15 p.m.

Wilkes Emergency Medical Services was at the scene, as well as the Ronda Fire Department.
