On N.C. 18 North

A Kia, in foreground, and Toyota, in background in front of Wilkes EMS SUV, collided Thursday at the intersection of N.C. 18 North and Northview Plaza shopping center entrance drive. The Toyota driver died and the other driver was taken to a hospital. The Kia’s path after impact is visible in upper left.

A 95-year-old woman died in a wreck on N.C. 18 North in North Wilkesboro Thursday morning.

Iva Billings Johnson of North Wilkesboro was southbound on N.C. 18 North when she attempted to turn left onto the entrance drive to Northview Plaza shopping center and her Toyota Camry was struck by a Kia driven by Deja Monique Kennedy, 23, said Capt. Brad Mathis of the North Wilkesboro Police Department.

Mathis said Johnson, wearing a seat belt, died at the scene.

Wilkes Emergency Medical Services transported Kennedy to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem with leg and hip injuries. Mathis said Monday that Kennedy, of North Wilkesboro, has been released from the hospital.

Mathis said the Kia was northbound on N.C. 18 North when the wreck occurred at the intersection, which has stoplights, at 9:14 a.m. He said Monday that an investigation determined that the wreck resulted from Johnson making an improper left turn instead of yielding to the Kia. He said the investigation is continuing.

After impact, both vehicles came to rest on the east side of N.C. 18 North. The Toyota was partly in the Pizza Hut parking lot and partly in the grass between the parking lot and N.C. 18 North. The Kia was considerably farther away from the point of impact in grass on the other (south) side of the Northview Plaza entrance drive.

A collision reconstruction team consisting of North Wilkesboro and Wilkesboro police officers was on the scene Thursday.

The Kia appeared to have considerably more damage than the Toyota.

The North Wilkesboro Fire Department also responded.
