At noon Wednesday, the National Weather Service (NWS) forecast office in Blacksburg, Va., issued a wind advisory for Wilkes County.

The NWS said that west winds of 15 to 30 miles per hour were probable, with gusts up to 50 mph possible. The advisory remains in effect until 1 p.m. Thursday.

Surry and Caldwell counties were also placed under the wind advisory.

Watauga, Ashe and Alleghany counties were placed in a High Wind Warning until 7 p.m. Wednesday. The NWS cautioned that wind gusts there could be 55 to 60 mph.

The NWS stated that damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines in the advised areas. It said widespread power outages are possible and travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles on north to south roadways. Outdoor objects should be secured, according to the NWS.
