The Wilkes Sheriff’s Office bomb squad was dispatched to a residence in Ashe County about 9 p.m. Wednesday in reference to possible explosives, the Wilkes Journal-Patriot learned.

The incident also reportedly involved a standoff with law enforcement.

The bomb squad was told to go to an address near Bethany United Methodist Church on N.C. 194. This is near U.S. 221 in the Baldwin section and a section of U.S. 221 was closed by law enforcement due to the incident.

The Ashe and Watauga sheriff's offices, N.C. Highway Patrol and multiple fire departments also were on the scene. Those involved include special weapons and tactics personnel.

No additional details were immediately available.
