Wilkes County Schools made the following announcement at 6 p.m. Thursday:

"Effective March 12, 2020, Wilkes County Schools will suspend all field trips and will reevaluate this in early April.

"Wilkes County Schools will follow the recommendation of the NCHSAA and suspend the Spring Sports Season at the conclusion of tonight's games (Thursday, March 12, 2020). This decision impacts practices as well as scheduled games for both middle and high schools and will be reevaluated in early April as well.

"Per the Governor's recommendation, all gatherings of more than 100 people should be postponed. The Governor did not recommend school closings at this time.

"We appreciate your understanding as we make decisions to ensure the safety of our students and staff."
