Wilkes Health Department staff vaccinate Tyson Foods employees at the Tyson complex Wednesday.

Forty-five employees of Tyson Foods Inc. ages 65 and older were vaccinated for COVID-19 at the Tyson complex in Wilkesboro Wednesday.

Wilkes Health Department Director Rachel Willard said that at the request of Tyson Foods, a team of six people from the health department provided the vaccinations with part of the Moderna vaccine allocated this week to the health department for first doses. Tyson spokesman Derek Burleson was quoted in other media as saying it was the first time the vaccine was administered at a Tyson facility to Tyson employees who aren’t classified as medical professionals.

He said the vaccine has been administered to Tyson nurses and health-services staff in a partnership with Matrix Medical Network.
