A primary purpose is helping students while in-person classes are cancelled due to the coronavirus and their education is being provided online, said Jody R. The sites in Wilkes are the Ferguson, Boomer, Brushy Mountain, Moravian Falls, Champion, Millers Creek, Wilbar, Roaring River, Shepherds Crossroads and Traphill fire stations, as well as Samaritan Kitchen of Wilkes and the Wilkes Communications Pavilion on Main Street, Wilkesboro.

Call said there will be a total of at least 54 sites in the counties of Wilkes, Stokes, Catawba, Washington, Beaufort, Hyde, Richmond, Montgomery, Polk, Buncombe, Person, Clay, Cherokee and Columbus, all in the Wilkes Communications service area. It’s also being provided in parts of Virginia.

Call said all of the Wi-Fi sites will be functioning by Wednesday.
