Westbound I-40 closed in Iredell County

The N.C. Department of Transportation reported that westbound lanes of Interstate 40 near Old Mountain Road in Iredell County were closed Friday afternoon due to a large piece of concrete from the overpass bridge over Beulah Road falling and leaving a hole in the bridge. The DOT is detouring traffic on Stamey Farm Road (Exit 145) to U.S. 70 West and back to the I-40 via Sharon School Road (Exit 141).  DOT officials are assessing the bridge to determine repairs needed, but the road closure was expected to remain in place through the first of next week.  Significant travel delays are anticipated. The DOT said motorists are encouraged to follow the detour or find an alternate route.
