The exit ramp from U.S. 221 to U.S. 421 in Watauga County’s Deep Gap community for eastbound motorists headed toward Wilkes County is closed for construction of new drainage on the ramp.
Motorists on U.S. 221 wanting to use the exit ramp are being directed on a marked detour that requires going west on U.S. 421 toward Boone for several hundred yards and then making a U-turn to go east toward Wilkes County.
The exit ramp from U.S. 221 to U.S. 421 for eastbound traffic on U.S. 421 is expected to be closed for about a month starting Monday, but the actual closure period will depend on weather, stated an N.C. Department of Transportation press release.
A contractor for DOT is constructing the new drainage on the closed exit ramp. All other ramps at this recently-constructed interchange will remain open.
