A teenager died Monday night in what North Wilkesboro Police Department investigators determined was an accidental shooting, according to a press release from the department.
North Wilkesboro officers were dispatched to a residence at 1007 Sixth Street (near Hinshaw Street) at 8:50 p.m. Monday in response to a report of a shooting, stated the press release, prepared by North Wilkesboro Officer Allison Sheets.
“Upon arrival, officers found that 16-year-old Nathaniel Brooks had been shot in the chest. Mr. Brooks died at the scene,” the press release said.
“North Wilkesboro Police Criminal Investigations officers arrived and determined that the victim had been accidentally shot by his father, Matthew S. Brooks, who had just completed cleaning the firearm. The investigation is continuing,” the release said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Brooks family.”
North Wilkesboro Police Chief Joe Rankin said the accident occurred at the Brooks home and that the firearm involved was a semi-automatic handgun.
Wilkes Emergency Medical Services was dispatched.
