A teenager was killed in a collision Tuesday afternoon on the eastern end of Greenhorn road in the Austin community.
Cyrus J. Smith, 16, of Roaring River, driver of a 1997 Chevrolet S-10 pickup, died at the scene, according to Trooper B.W. Pettit of the N.C. Highway Patrol.
Around 4:50 p.m., Andrew F. Dillard, 17, of Mulberry, driver of a 2006 Ford F-150 pickup, was traveling east when he hit water in the road, slid left of center and collided with Smith, Pettit said.
The wreck happened about four miles north of Ronda
Wilkes Emergency Medical Services took an 11-year-old passenger in Dillard’s truck to Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin for treatment of minor injuries, the trooper said. Dillard, initially trapped in the wreckage, declined to be taken to a hospital.
The incident occurred in the Austin Fire District. Responding were Austin Fire and Rescue, Pleasant Hill Fire Department, Shepherds Crossroads Fire Department and the Wilkes Rescue Squad.
Both pickups were total losses, Pettit said.
Traffic was blocked both ways on two-lane Greenhorn Road for over two hours.
