The Elkin Police Department arrested a Wilkes County teenager Friday on two counts of second-degree murder and one count of spontaneous speed competition in connection with an April 20 wreck that caused the death of two men.
Marshall Logan Irwin, 17, of Greenhorn Road, Roaring River was also charged with speeding 114 mph in a 55-mph zone and careless and reckless driving.
Corp. William Blackburn of the Elkin Police Department charged Irwin, as well as Michael Lee Beck, 26, of Old Virginia Road, Elkin. Blackburn charged Beck with two counts of aid and bet second-degree murder, spontaneous speed competition, speeding mph in a 55-mph zone and careless and reckless driving.
An investigation determined the fatal collision was caused by a street race between Irwin and Beck, also arrested Friday. The investigation was conducted by the Elkin Police Department and the N.C. Highway Patrol.
A vehicle occupied by Glen Renrick Knutt and Russell Knutt, both of Brooklyn, New York, was turning into the Speedway convenience store on CC Camp Road in Elkin when it was struck by a vehicle operated by Irwin on April 20. Glen Knutt and Russell Knutt were fatally injured. Irwin also was injured.
Irwin and Beck were given secured bonds of $300,000 each when they appeared before a Surry County magistrate.
