UPDATE: By 4 p.m. Wednesday, multiple media outlets were reporting that two Watauga Sheriff's Office deputies were shot while checking on someone's well-being. No details on conditions of the two deputies were immediately available.
UPDATE: At about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, the Boone Police Department tweeted that it is assisting the Watauga Sheriff's Office with an ongoing standoff.
At about 11 a.m. Wednesday, the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office with a situation in the area of Brown’s Chapel Road and Hardaman Circle east of Boone.
The Wilkes Journal-Patriot received a report saying the incident involved two law enforcement officers being “down,” which indicates injured, inside a residence.
According to scanner communication, a landing zone for a medical helicopter was set up in the area of Mount Vernon Baptist Church off Bamboo Road.
The Watauga Sheriff’s Office requested emergency assistance from the Wilkes Sheriff’s Office bomb squad with the sheriff’s office’s robot and these were dispatched. The Wilkes Sheriff’s Office Special Weapons and Tactics Team and the sheriff’s office’s armored vehicle were also dispatched.
Also at about 11 a.m., Watauga County Emergency Services sent out an alert on Facebook instructing people in the Hardaman Circle area to “shelter in place.” Those residents were told to “remain in your home with doors and windows closed.”
