Ronda Fire & Rescue was busy removing trees from roadways after strong winds hit Friday and Sunday nights.

Ronda Chief Bruce Byrd said the department spent three hours clearing trees from Bethel and Bagley Springs roads in the Bethel section of far eastern Wilkes on Friday night.

On Sunday night, strong winds left both lanes of Clingman Road blocked by a fallen tree at a point near the Old Highway 60 intersection.

Downed trees and utility lines on Old Highway 60 and N.C. 268 East in the Ronda area also were reported Sunday night. There was a report of utility lines on a vehicle on N.C. 268 East.

The storm passed through around 10:50 p.m. Sunday and most roadways were cleared by 11:30 p.m., but at midnight members of the Ronda department were still at the scene of downed power lines and waiting for a Duke Energy repair crew to arrive.
