A 35-year-old political newcomer finished on top, a second-time candidate who narrowly lost in 2017 was second and a veteran incumbent finished third in the race for three North Wilkesboro commissioner seats Tuesday.

In the race for two Wilkesboro councilman seats, an incumbent bagged his fourth first place finish and a candidate who narrowly lost as an incumbent in 2017 finished second.

Wilkesboro’s incumbent mayor was easily elected to his fourth straight term after three prior terms as a councilman.

All of the terms are for four years. The Wilkes Board of Elections plans to canvass the results next week.

Unofficial results, with winners indicated by asterisks, are below.

In the race for three North Wilkesboro seats:

• * Andrew Palmer, 348 votes (30.77%);

• * Michael Parsons, 267 (23.61%);

• * Bert Hall, 201 (17.77%);

• Otis W. Church, 185 (16.36);

• Tiger Posey, 106 (9.37%);

• Chad George, 20 (1.77%);

• four write-in votes, (0.35%).

In the race for two Wilkesboro councilman seats:

• * Jimmy Hayes, 287 votes (29.29%);

• * Andrew “Andy” Soots, 254, (25.92%);

• J. Gary Johnson, 223, (22.76%);

• Gregory A. Minton, 213 (21.73%);

• three write-in votes, (0.31%).

In the race for Wilkesboro mayor:

• * Mike Inscore, 416 votes (74.29%);

• Dallas Handy, 140 votes (25%);

• four write-in votes, (0.71%).

Voter turnout

Voter turnout was similar to other elections in the Wilkesboros in recent years. In Wilkesboro, 27% (574) of the town's 2,133 registered voters cast ballots. There was a 21% turnout in North Wilkesboro, with 463 out of 2,182 registered voters casting ballots.
