Capital Bank on U.S. 421 West in Wilkesboro closed for the day and firefighters were dispatched when smoke was reported there Wednesday afternoon.

Wilkesboro Fire Chief Jason Smithey said that due to smoke being visible throughout the ceiling area when Wilkesboro and Millers Creek firefighters arrived about 1:30 p.m., it was treated as a working fire and the Cricket Fire Department was dispatched also.

Smithey said that after large fans were used to clear much of the smoke from the interior, smoke was found to be coming from an over-heated motor attached to a booster fan above the break room ceiling. He said there was no actual fire or fire damage.

Maintenance personnel working for the bank assumed responsibility for making necessary repairs, said Smithey, adding that he was told the bank was expected to reopen on regular hours Thursday.

About 30 firefighters responded Wednesday and some were there until a little after 3 p.m.
