The name of the man who died in a motorcycle wreck Wednesday evening while being pursued by the N.C. Highway Patrol and the names of two troopers who were pursuing him have been released.
Cody Adam Cooper, 26, of Ferguson died when the 2002 Honda motorcycle he was operating wrecked on U.S. 421 near the South Minton Road intersection west of Wilkesboro.
Involved in the pursuit of Cooper were Trooper J. E. Belcher, a 10-year veteran, and Trooper S. T. Hall, a four-year veteran. Both are assigned to Wilkes County in Troop F, District 2.
A highway patrol press release said Belcher and Hall have been placed on administrative duty pending an internal investigation, which is agency protocol.
The release said the chase began after one of the troopers attempted to stop the motorcycle for a speeding violation on U.S. 421 and the wreck occurred during the course of the pursuit.
Cooper died at the scene from his injuries as a result of the collision, the release said.
At the request of the highway patrol, the State Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation into the incident.
Emergency personnel were dispatched at 5:41 p.m. They included the N.C. Highway Patrol, Wilkes EMS, Wilkes Rescue Squad and the Champion, Millers Creek and Wilkesboro fire departments.
