UPDATE: North Wilkesboro Police Chief Joe Rankin said Monday afternoon that Kevin Dean Stanley of North Wilkesboro is in critical condition at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center after being injured in a wreck Sunday night.

Wilkes Emergency Medical Services transported a man to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem after the moped he was operating collided with a 2006 GMC Envoy on N.C. 18 North in North Wilkesboro about 9:10 p.m. Sunday, said Wilkes Emergency Medical Services

Rankin said Kevin Dean Stanley, 22, of North Wilkesboro, was southbound on N.C. 18 when he ran a red light and his moped hit the side of the GMC, which was making a left turn into the Taco Bell restaurant entrance drive.

Rankin said the GMC was driven by Luis Vaelquez, 17, of North Wilkesboro. He said Vaelquez was charged with having no operator’s license.

The incident was initially reported as a fatality, but emergency personnel at the scene said Stanley was in stable condition when he was transported from the scene.
