Brian Minton announced Thursday that he won’t seek re-election to a second term as a Wilkes County commissioner in 2022.

“Serving the people of Wilkes County has truly been an honor for me. I have taken the job very seriously as the decisions made by the board affect all of the citizens in our county,” said Minton in an email to the Wilkes Journal-Patriot.

“After much consideration and prayer, I have made the decision not to seek re-election to the Wilkes County Board of County Commissioners. I want to thank my family, friends and supporters,” he added. Minton currently serves as vice chairman of the commissioners.

David Gambill, the other Wilkes County commissioner up for re-election in 2022, hasn’t yet said if he plans to file. Gambill is in his third term.

Minton and Gambill were elected with 15,391 and 14,872 votes respectively in 2018. Both are Republicans.

The filing period for next year’s election is Dec. 6-17. Party primaries are March 8, 2022. The general election is Nov. 8, 2022. All five of the county commissioner terms are for four years.
