The National Park Service announced the discovery on Saturday of a deceased man below the Yadkin Valley Overlook at Milepost 289.8 on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Watauga County.

The NPS stated that a park visitor found the body about 1:14 p.m. Saturday. Law enforcement rangers responded to the scene and located the deceased male at 1:19 p.m.

An investigation is underway to determine the identity and cause of death. It’s being conducted by the NPS Investigative Services Branch with assistance from N.C State Bureau of Investigation. An autopsy is scheduled Tuesday.

“Preliminary information gathered by investigators does not suggest any ongoing concern for public safety, or that this investigation is related to any other ongoing investigations,” stated a Parkway news release.

No further details have been released.
