Law enforcement officers took a man armed with a handgun into custody after finding him in a bathroom at Walmart on U.S. 421 West in Wilkesboro Saturday night, said Capt. Jason Delbert of the Wilkesboro Police Department.
Delbert said no shots were fired and there were no injuries in the incident, which began with a report made to Wilkesboro police about a disturbance involving a man armed with a gun in the Dunham’s Sports parking lot on U.S. 421 in Wilkesboro shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday.
Delbert said a responding officer pursued the man into Dunham’s but he escaped.
The Wilkes Communications Center then received a report of a man armed with a gun in the nearby Walmart parking lot, said Chief Deputy David Carson of the Wilkes Sheriff’s Office. This report was made about 8:05 p.m.
Officers pursued the man into Walmart and he was taken into custody after he was found trying hide in a bathroom, said Delbert. Walmart was evacuated while this was going on, he added.
The 24-hour Wilkesboro Walmart was also closed due to the incident. It was about to reopen at 10:40 p.m. Wilkesboro police left the scene a little before that.
Dunham’s, which normally closes at 9:30 p.m., was closed early due to the incident.
In addition to Wilkesboro police, Wilkes Sheriff’s Office deputies and N.C. Highway Patrol troopers also responded.
The name of the man taken into custody and details about the disturbance weren’t immediately available.
The Wilkesboro Police Department received calls from national and regional news media about the incident.
