A man was found dead in his wrecked pickup Sunday afternoon on unpaved Casey’s Branch Road off U.S. 421 in the Champion community, according to Sgt. R.K. Aldridge of the N.C. Highway Patrol.

James Paul Stanley, 71, of North Wilkesboro had been in his pickup for a couple of days before being found, Aldridge said.

Troopers P.T. Cardwell and F.A. Pipes were called to the scene around 3:15 p.m.

The Chevrolet truck was located just off the road against a tree at the top of an embankment, Aldridge said, noting that the door was open as if Stanley had attempted to get out. Damage was minimal because the vehicle was going at a very slow speed at the time of the wreck.

An autopsy is being performed at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem to determine whether or not Stanley was suffering from a medical event at the time of his death, Aldridge said.
