A man died in an all-terrain vehicle accident in a remote area of McGrady late Monday afternoon.

Billy N. Mathis, 84, of North Wilkesboro, died at the scene. He was president of Mathis & Son Grading in North Wilkesboro.

McGrady Fire & Rescue Chief Mike Lane said the accident occurred about five miles north of Cane Creek Church Road. It was south of Longbottom Road and Mountain Vista Drive. McGrady Fire & Rescue and the Wilkes Rescue Squad were dispatched about 6 p.m.

Lane said Mathis was operating a side-by-side ATV with a covered top on a narrow trail Monday on his land when the vehicle went off the side of the trail and about 80 feet down a steep embankment. The ATV overturned multiple times. Lane said the victim remained in the ATV.

He said a person who was helping Mathis build water breaks on trails to prevent erosion found him and called a relative of Mathis.

From Cane Creek Church Road, emergency personnel drove four-wheel-drive trucks about half of the distance to the accident scene and then four-wheelers the rest of the way. Lane said that after McGrady personnel rappelled down the steep embankment to reach the victim and the wrecked ATV, a better way out was found.

Wilkes Emergency Medical Services and the Wilkes Sheriff’s Office also responded.
