A horse was found dead from a gunshot in a field on Pumpkin Run Road in Purlear over the weekend.

Leslie Ray Price Jr. reported Sunday to the Wilkes Sheriff’s Office that he found his Tennessee walking horse mare had been shot in the neck when he arrived to feed his horses Saturday morning. The horse had an estimated value of $2,500.

Price said all of his horses were fine when he fed them at the same location Wednesday night, stated the report of Deputy Joe Mathis of the sheriff’s office.

A feed bucket was found in the field near the shot horse. Price said another bucket, lead rope and halter were missing from the scene, Mathis reported. There are no suspects.

Pumpkin Run Road is a dead end road off U.S. 421 West in far western Wilkes.
