First United Methodist Church of North Wilkesboro recently presented the 2020 Laity Service Award to Jenny Hix.
Hix will be honored on Oct. 18 in a virtual laity service celebration of the Appalachian District of the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church.
She met the criteria for the annual award in that she is a member of the church, exemplifies a commitment to the Christian way of life, takes the love of Christ outside of the walls of the church and serves others in the community, and contributes to the life of the church and reflects a devotion of self to the service of others.
Hix is a faithful and active church servant, helping in the nursery, teaching children’s Sunday school classes, volunteering with vacation Bible school, and mentoring youth during the confirmation process. She is active on the mission and outreach committee, having participated in local, regional and international missions.
She also teaches in the church’s North Wilkesboro Elementary School Tuesday tutoring program. Hix has been a church member for many years, serving in many different roles, including president.
Hix keeps the church informed as to who is in need of prayer and has been known to befriend new members and visitors at church, taking them to lunch to get to know them better. Most recently, she volunteered to be a tribe leader, faithfully calling and caring for her “tribe members” regularly even when her own home was under quarantine.
In the community, Hix has been involved with Wilkes Circles of Care, the S.A.F.E. women’s shelter, Samaritan Kitchen of Wilkes, Wilkes Habitat for Humanity and Relay for Life. She has served on the board of directors of Wilkes ADAP and the alumni board of Lees-McRae College. She has organized many blood mobiles and served on the board of the Wilkes Alleghany Red Cross.
