One person filed for office Friday before the filing period for 2019 municipal elections ended at noon.

Dallas Steven Handy, 22, of Hillcrest Drive filed as a candidate for Wilkesboro mayor less than an hour before the deadline, said Wilkes Board of Elections Director Kim Caudill. Handy owns and operates a coffee shop in Wilkesboro.

Michael Vestal Inscore filed for re-election as Wilkesboro mayor on the first day of the filing period, which was July 5.

Candidates for the two Wilkesboro councilman seats on the ballot this year are incumbent James Gary Johnson, incumbent Jimmy Calvin Hayes, Claude Andrew “Andy” Soots and Gregory Alan “Greg” Minton.

Six people are running for three North Wilkesboro commissioner seats on the ballot this year. Incumbent Bert Hall filed on July 5 and Chad Keith George, Thomas Gray “Tiger” Posey, Michael Perry Parsons, Otis Wayne Church and Andrew Steven Palmer filed on Thursday.

Joe Johnston and Junior Goforth are up for reelection as North Wilkesboro commissioners and decided to not run.

The mayor's position in North Wilkesboro isn't on the ballot this year.
