A former assistant Ronda clerk has been charged with embezzling money from the town, said Ronda Mayor Victor Varela.
Alexandria Lachole Combs Hicks, 28, of Ronda was arrested Nov. 27 by deputies with the Wilkes Sheriff’s Office and charged with one count of embezzlement by a public official.
Hicks is accused of stealing nearly $1,500 in cash, Varela said, noting that she has repaid $500.
In September, Ronda water customers began complaining that their water had been cut off for non-payment despite their bills having been paid, the mayor said. They brought receipts in showing they had paid their bills.
Ronda Town Clerk Talesa Carter contacted the sheriff’s office about the matter and a subsequent investigation resulted in the charge filed against Hicks, Valera said, noting that the thefts had taken place over about a month.
Hicks, who had worked for the town for nearly two years, took the money after falling on financially hard times due to personal problems, Valera said.
Hicks has a hearing set for Feb. 25 in Wilkes District Court.
