A brick and wood frame house at 804 Westover Drive in Wilkesboro was heavily damaged by fire Saturday.
After the Wilkesboro Fire Department was dispatched at about 3 p.m. Saturday, firefighters found the living room engulfed in flames. A dark plume of smoke from the house was soon visible from miles away.
The Broadway and Moravian Falls fire departments were dispatched to assist Wilkesboro.
The Champion Fire Department was dispatched to help cover Wilkesboro, but was sent on to the Westover Drive fire at Wilkesboro Fire Chief Jason Smithey’s request due to the need for more manpower. The Millers Creek Fire Department then stood by to cover the western end of Wilkesboro.
Smithey said the fire began in the living room, but added that the fire is under investigation.
He said Conrad McNeil owned and lived in the home and that one of two people there when the fire began reported the blaze. Smithey said McNeil has homeowner’s insurance.
The fire was at the end of Westover Drive, a dead-end road off Edgewood Road near the Wilkesboro town limits.
Wilkes Emergency Medical Services and the Wilkes Rescue Squad also responded. Smithey said a total of about 40 firefighters and other emergency personnel were on the scene.
