Early Thursday morning

HOME ON WESTOVER DRIVE in Wilkesboro was heavily damaged by fire early Thursday morning.

An unoccupied home at 800 Westover Drive on Wilkesboro was heavily damaged by fire early Thursday morning.

Wilkesboro Fire Chief Jason Smithey said the fire is under investigation and the cause hasn’t been determined. The Wilkesboro Police Department and State Bureau of Investigation are involved in the investigation.

Smithey said the Wilkesboro, North Wilkesboro and Broadway fire departments were dispatched at 1:38 a.m. Thursday after the resident of a nearby house on Westover reported seeing the fire. He said it was a fully involved blaze when firefighters arrived.

The house, with about 1,300-square-feet of floor space, was still standing after the fire was extinguished but Smithey said it was damaged beyond repair. He said the house belongs to Vicki Wayne, a Wilkes County resident, and was being used for storage. Smithey said it had electricity.

Westover Drive is off Edgewood Road near the town limits.
