An abandoned house on Old Brickyard Road in the Cricket Fire District was destroyed by fire early Friday morning.
Firefighters were dispatched at 2:08 a.m. and found the house engulfed in flames when they arrived, said Wilkes Fire Marshal Niki Hamby.
The house hadn’t been occupied in four or five years, had no electricity or other power sources and was dilapidated, said Hamby, adding that there was no insurance on the structure.
He said the cause of the fire, and if it was accidental or intentional, weren’t determined. He said the cause of a fire in another home nearby a few months ago was ruled accidental.
Hamby said he spoke with Judy Church Pearson, daughter of the couple who owned the house and representative of the estate.
Assisting the Cricket Fire Department on the fire were the North Wilkesboro, Millers Creek and Moravian Falls fire departments. Firefighters were on the scene until about 8:28 a.m. Friday.
