A man was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem with serious injuries after a wreck in U.S. 421 West in the Mount Pleasant community Monday night.

The vehicle was eastbound toward Wilkesboro when it ran off the right side of the road and crashed through a guardrail at the intersection of Rest Home Road, said Champion Fire Chief Craig Hollar. It was raining at the time.

Hollar said the car appeared to have flipped multiple times and traveled about 150-200 feet off the road before it came to rest on its wheels down a ravine.

He said the driver was found lying on the ground and semi-conscious, apparently after he was ejected. Wilkes Emergency Medical Services transported him to Wake Forest Baptist with head and other injuries.

Hollar said the car was so heavily damaged that he couldn’t identify the make and model. Champion Fire and Rescue was dispatched at 11:18 p.m.

The N.C. Highway Patrol is investigating. Additional details are forthcoming.
