A Lenoir man was seriously injured when his box truck hit a large tree across N.C. 16 North Tuesday morning in the Wilbar community, according to Trooper J.L. Wilson of the N.C. Highway Patrol.

Donald Lee White, 37, of Lenoir, driver of a 2004 Freightliner box truck, was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem by Wilkes Emergency Medical Services. Wilson said it appeared White was suffering from internal and leg injuries.

White was heading south in a curve when he hit the tree, Wilson said. The trooper noted that the impact was severe.

It appeared that the tree had fallen across the highway just before the truck struck it, Wilson said.

Damage to the truck, owned by Aramark Services Inc. of Greensboro, was listed by the trooper at $12,000.

Wilbar Fire Department first responders and firefighters provided assistance at the scene.

There were reports of strong winds resulting in downed trees and limbs on roads at multiple locations in the Wilbar area Tuesday morning.
