One driver was flown to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem after a two-car collision in North Wilkesboro about 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Joe McMillan of Wilkesboro, driving a Chevrolet, was entering Wilkesboro Avenue from Cherry Street and headed east when his car was struck by a westbound Toyota, said North Wilkesboro Police Chief Joe Rankin.

Wilkes Emergency Medical Services transported both drivers to Wilkes Medical Center. A Wilkes EMS spokesman said McMillan was seriously injured and was flown by AirCare helicopter from Wilkes Medical Center to Wake Forest Baptist.

The EMS spokesman said the man driving the Toyota wasn't seriously injured, but his name wasn't immediately available.

At 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, a Wake Forest Baptist spokesman said McMillan was still in the emergency room there and that no details were available yet on his condition.

Both four-door cars were heavily damaged. The North Wilkesboro Police Department responded and is investigating. The North Wilkesboro Fire Department also responded.
