A man was shot by a Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office deputy in the Mulberry community about 1:20 p.m. Friday, said Chief Deputy David Carson.

Carson said the deputy shot the man in a garage near a residence along N.C. 18 North, across from Baptist Home Baptist Church. He said it occurred during an investigation, but not while the deputy was responding to an incident.

The man who was shot was transported by AirCare helicopter to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, said Carson, adding that no one else was injured.

Wilkes Sheriff’s Office and State Bureau of Investigation personnel were still on the scene of the incident at 3:30 p.m. Friday. No additional details were immediately available.

Muberry-Fairplains Fire Department first responders and Wilkes Emergency Medical Services also responded.
