On Greenhorn Road

DRIVER OF PICKUP at left died as a result of the vehicle colliding with the Chevrolet Tahoe Monday afternoon.

A man died when the pickup he was driving collided with a sport utility vehicle, went off the road, flipped and burst into flames Monday afternoon in the Shepherds Crossroads community.

The wreck occurred on Greenhorn Road, about a half mile east of where it intersects with White Plains Church Road north of Roaring River, about 3:40 p.m. Monday.

The man who died was driving a Chevrolet S-10 pickup that collided head-on with a Chevrolet Tahoe SUV. The pickup was on its top when it stopped in a field and the SUV remained in the roadway.

A woman and several children in the Chevrolet Tahoe were transported by Wilkes Emergency Medical Services to Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin with non-life threatening injuries, said a Wilkes EMS spokesman.

The N.C. Highway Patrol is investigating and the name of the man who died hadn’t been released by late Monday afternoon, pending notification of next of kin.

Shepherds Crossroads Fire Department and Wilkes Rescue Squad personnel were at the scene, along Wilkes Sheriff’s Office deputies.
