Two drivers were transported to Wilkes Medical Center in stable condition after their vehicles collided Friday afternoon on N.C. 18 North near McGrady.
The male driver headed south in a red Chevrolet Monte Carlo was distracted by bees in the car when he swerved left of center and hit a white Buick Lacrosse being driven north by a female about 2:30 p.m., according to N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper B.W. Pettit.
“He said there were bees in the car, and he was trying to swat them,” said Pettit. The Monte Carlo ended up down an embankment on the north-bound side of the roadway.
“They both looked stable when they left the scene,” according to Pettit. He added that he would interview the driver at the hospital to determine if there were other contributing factors.
Trooper C.M. Anderson assisted Pettit at the scene. The North Wilkesboro and Mulberry-Fairplains fire departments responded, as did Wilkes Emergency Medical Services and Wilkes Rescue Squad.
Both lanes of N.C. 18 were closed for about an hour while the vehicles were being cleared from the scene.
