The planning department of the Town of Wilkesboro announced Tuesday that “Christmas in the Commons,” planned for Saturday, Dec. 5, in the downtown, has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

A spokesperson said the difficult decision was made during a critical time in the pandemic timeline. “This year has brought many changes to the town’s event schedule and we appreciate your understanding and commitment to the community’s health and safety,” stated a release from the town.

The release also said the 2019 event brought record attendance and a festive atmosphere for the entire family with inflatable games, crafts, train rides, food vendors and visits with Santa. “To match this quality of event while maintaining social distancing is unfortunately not feasible this year.”

The downtown will still be transformed into a winter wonderland with decorations and a tree lighting date that will be announced in the coming weeks, the release stated.
