N.C. 18 South was closed to traffic in both directions for about two hours Friday afternoon due to a vehicle fire in Boomer, near the High Rock Road intersection closest to Wilkesboro.

A Cadillac being driven on the highway caught fire about 5:30 p.m. Friday, said Boomer Fire Chief Allen Nichols.

The fire began in the engine compartment and spread throughout the car, which Nichols said had a full tank of gas. He said it burned through the gas fill tube, which resulted in gas flowing onto the highway and grass shoulder and catching fire.

Nichols said firefighters had to use foam due to burning gas vapor and because the fire became hard to reach.

He said there were no injuries. The Wilkes Sheriff’s Office and N.C. Highway Patrol also were on the scene.

No additional details were immediately available.
