The Wilkes Sheriff’s Office received a report of four checks totaling $4,252.40 being written on the West Wilkes High School Athletic Booster Club account without authorization.

David Adams and Tamara Shepherd, representatives of the booster club, reported the incidents on Tuesday. Each unauthorized check was written to a party outside North Carolina and each was signed by the same person, said Capt. Brandon Absher of the sheriff’s office.

Absher said the checks appear to be computer-generated and are believed to be forgeries resulting from wire fraud. He said the booster club representatives said no checks are missing from the organization’s checkbook.
