Three people were injured when a Chevrolet pickup and Jeep Liberty SUV collided on N.C. 268 West in Wilkesboro while it was raining about 10:35 a.m. Saturday.
Emergency personnel worked about 45 minutes before having all three freed from the wreckage – the driver and a passenger in the SUV and the driver of the pickup.
Wilkes Rescue Squad Chief Cole Wyatt said both drivers were pinned in and seriously injured. He said the passenger in the SUV was entrapped (unable to open a door) and had minor injuries.
The wreck resulted in the Jeep going off the right side of the west-bound lane, overturning and ending up on its side in the edge of a cornfield near the Wilkes Family YMCA.
The pickup came to rest partly in the eastbound lane and partly in the entrance drive to the Little Market Basket convenience store. The driver’s side of the pickup was heavily damaged.
Wilkes Emergency Medical Services transported all three.
The Wilkes Rescue Squad and the Wilkesboro, Millers Creek and Goshen fire departments were all on the scene, as well as the Wilkesboro Police Department.
Both lanes of N.C. 268 West were closed to traffic for over an hour.
Wilkesboro police are investigating and no additional details were immediately available.
