One person died and two others were injured in single vehicle wreck Friday night on N.C. 901 in Union Grove in Iredell County, a couple of miles south of the Wilkes County line.

Master Trooper Jeffrey Swagger said a 2013 Toyota Tacoma pickup was eastbound on N.C. 901 when it ran off the right side of the road and hit a mailbox. The pickup then crossed back over N.C. 901, ran off the left side of the road, hit a large brick sign and overturned, said the trooper.

Swagger said a front seat passenger in the pickup, Robert Douglas Shumate, 60, of Union Grove, died at the scene from his injuries. He said the driver of the pickup, Cheyanna Pardue, 27, of Hamptonville, and passenger Carrie Burchette, 28, of Elkin were both injured.

The initial investigation indicated alcohol impairment was a contributing factor and Pardue was charged with driving while impaired, driving while license revoked and a seatbelt violation, said Swagger. Further charges are pending as the Highway Patrol continues its investigation continues and consults with the Iredell County district attorney’s office, he added.

Troopers responded to the wreck about 9:25 p.m. Friday. It occurred near the Jennings Road intersection with N.C. 901 and a little over four miles east of where N.C. 901 intersects with N.C. 115.

3rd death in June 13 wreckSwagger also announced that a third person died as a result of a collision between a golf cart and a car about 9:30 p.m. June 13 in Iredell County. He said Jada Marlowe, 13, of Statesville, died Monday.

She was among five passengers in a golf cart operated by Michael Shane Marlowe, 39, of Statesville, that collided with a 2009 Honda Accord on Ford Dobbs Road, just north of Statesville and less than a mile east of N.C 115.

Swagger said Michael Marlowe and Bentley Marlowe, 5, of Statesville, died at the scene. Bentley Marlowe was among the five passengers in the golf cart. The other three passengers were critically injured

Swagger said the driver of the Honda, Austin Ray Harmon, 23, of Statesville, wasn’t injured. Harmon was arrested and charged with driving while impaired, two counts of felony death by vehicle, and three counts of felony serious injury by vehicle. Swagger said additional charges against Harmon as the investigation continues.
